Burwell Museum

The Victorian schoolhouse that is now Burwell Museum sits in a proper village setting, about eight miles northeast of Cambridge. Inside, you'll find the sort of local collection that rewards a slow browse - agricultural tools, domestic bygones, and photographs that tell the story of what life was actually like in the Fens rather than what the guidebooks say it should have been like.

It's run by volunteers who clearly care about the place, and that shows. The displays aren't flashy or heavily interactive, but they're thoughtful. If you're into social history or just curious about how ordinary people lived in rural Cambridgeshire over the past couple of centuries, you'll find something to latch onto here. Children under twelve will probably get restless after thirty minutes or so - there's no play area or hands-on stuff - but older kids with any interest in history won't mind spending an hour.

Admission is free, which is generous, though a small donation keeps the lights on. Opening is limited to summer months and weekends, so check ahead before making the trip out. The village itself has a working windmill worth a look, and you're close enough to Cambridge to combine it with a day in the city.

If you're staying at Lodeside Glamping or Fen Meadows, both just four miles away, it's an easy detour. Don't go expecting something grand. Go because you want to understand a place through its ordinary objects, not its famous ones.
