Burn Gliding Club

Watching a glider launch from Burn airfield is genuinely hypnotic - that moment when the tow rope releases and the aircraft just... floats. The club sits on the flat Yorkshire plains between Goole and Selby, which probably sounds dull until you realise those endless horizons are exactly what make thermal soaring possible here.

Burn Gliding Club is working airfield, not a theme park. You won't be whizzing through the sky unless you book a trial flight, which most serious visitors do. The real appeal is either getting airborne yourself or standing trackside watching others attempt things that shouldn't be possible - watching a sailplane climb without any engine remains genuinely brilliant.

If you're based at Apple Blossom Caravan and Camping, it's barely twenty minutes away. The club welcomes spectators on flying days, though there's no guaranteed show - weather matters. You'll want to phone ahead. Allow a couple of hours minimum if you're planning to watch, longer if you're committing to an experience flight (these don't come cheap, but they're proper memorable).

Families with older kids who've got any interest in aviation will get something from it. Younger children might find standing about in a field for an hour tedious unless there's constant action overhead. Spring and summer offer the best conditions, though thermal activity really picks up July onwards.

It's not a drop-in attraction - you'll need to do your homework - but for anyone serious about flying or just keen on watching something genuinely different, it's well worth the detour from the caravan parks nearby.
