Burial Ground

Stone markers scattered across pastureland tell stories older than any written record. This Bronze Age burial ground, just outside Towcester, offers little more than grassy mounds and the occasional exposed sarsen stone to mark where our ancestors laid their dead to rest over 3,000 years ago. You'll need a proper eye for archaeology to appreciate what you're looking at here.

Walkers and history enthusiasts will get the most from a visit, though don't expect dramatic stone circles or reconstructed tombs. The site feels wonderfully untouched, which means it's essentially a field with some lumps in it. That's rather the point - this is archaeology in its raw state, unmarked by interpretation boards or visitor centres.

Access appears to be free, though you'll want to check with local authorities about crossing private land. Allow thirty minutes unless you're the sort who likes to sit and contemplate ancient landscapes. The setting works well with camping holidays around Silverstone - several farm campsites like Windmill Farm and Hamilton Fields sit within three miles, making this an easy detour for families staying in the area. Just don't expect the kids to be riveted by what amounts to very old bumps in a field.
