Bumbling Hole

The entrance to Bumbling Hole isn't much to look at from the path - just a dark gap in the limestone above Carnforth way. But duck down and you're inside a proper cave system with water running through it, the kind of place that rewards a bit of scrambling about and getting your hands dirty.

It's a working stream cave, which means it's wet underfoot and occasionally slippery. Bring a torch - a phone light won't cut it once you're properly inside. The passage opens up into chambers with low ceilings and moss-covered walls that glisten when light hits them. There's something genuinely atmospheric about it, even if you're only in there for twenty minutes or so.

This is one for the slightly adventurous walker rather than casual park visitors. Kids old enough not to panic in tight spaces will find it thrilling; younger ones might find the darkness unsettling. It's free to visit and takes about half an hour if you don't go too deep into the system. The real appeal is that it doesn't feel commercialised or safe-ified - this is actual caving, just without the abseil ropes.

If you're based at Primrose Glamping Pods nearby, it's an easy detour on a moorland walk. The surrounding countryside around Carnforth is solid for rambling, and a cave break is a decent addition to a day out. Just check conditions beforehand - heavy rain can make it inaccessible.
