Bugail Unig/Lonely Shepard

The drive up to Bugail Unig takes longer than you'd expect, winding through proper sheep country on narrow lanes near Crickhowell. Once you're there, though, you understand why someone bothered giving this spot a name.

It's a straightforward viewpoint - no visitor centre, no facilities, just a pull-in with a view that sweeps across the Brecon Beacons to one side and the rolling Powys valleys stretching out the other way. On a clear day, you can see for miles. The name translates to Lonely Shepherd, and standing there in the wind, you get why a solitary herder would've stopped to catch their breath and take in that perspective.

This works best if you're already hiking or driving the back roads around Crickhowell. Twenty minutes is enough to stand around, take some photos, get your bearings on the landscape. It's not a destination in itself - more a proper breather point if you're exploring the area. Walkers heading to the Beacons from nearby routes will find it a decent waypoint.

Families won't linger long unless the kids are old enough to appreciate a decent view without a playground attached. But if you're staying at Cwmdu Campsite just down the road, it's an easy diversion on a morning drive before heading to bigger attractions. Weather matters here - low cloud renders it pointless.

Free, naturally. No infrastructure, no operating hours to worry about. Just turn up.
