Buck Hill

The woodland around Buck Hill rises sharply from the surrounding countryside, and on a clear day you can see proper miles from the top. It's a genuine hike - nothing too gnarly, but you'll feel your legs by the time you reach the summit. The forest itself is mixed woodland, mostly deciduous, which means it's lovely in spring when the bluebells come through, and absolutely brilliant for a wander in autumn when the light filters through the changing leaves.

This isn't a manicured country estate with tea rooms and gift shops. It's proper working woodland where you might spot woodland birds and occasionally deer if you're quiet about it. Most people allow an hour to ninety minutes for the walk and viewpoint, depending on fitness and how long you linger at the top. Families with younger kids might find the climb a bit steep, though determined walkers aged eight and up will manage it fine. It's free to access, which always helps.

The real value here is as a leg-stretch break when you're based at Charnwood Acres Caravan Park five miles away. It works well as a morning walk before heading into Leicester proper, or a late afternoon climb when the sun's lower and less intense. If you're after serious woodland rambles with infrastructure and facilities, you'd be better served looking elsewhere in the area. But if you want to get your boots muddy and your lungs working without faffing about, Buck Hill delivers.
