Bryn Mawr

The walk up Bryn Mawr from Betws-y-Coed rewards you with proper views across the Conwy Valley - nothing flashy, but solid Welsh hill country that makes the effort worthwhile. It's a decent half-day venture, steep enough in places to feel like you've earned the summit, not so brutal that you're cursing your decision by halfway up.

What you get is the ridge walking that Wales does so well. The path weaves through moorland, and on a clear day you'll see right across to Snowdonia's bigger mountains looming in the distance. The summit itself is fairly modest - a cairn, windswept, views that stretch for miles if the weather plays ball. On a grey day, it's atmospheric rather than spectacular. Plan on two to three hours depending on fitness and how often you stop for breath.

This works particularly well if you're already in Betws-y-Coed for a few days - the village has that quiet mountain-town feel, and Bryn Mawr slots in neatly alongside exploring the river walks and the Swallow Falls nearby. Families with older kids (10+) will manage it fine; younger ones might find the climb tedious. Walkers looking for something a shade less crowded than Snowdon itself will appreciate the relative peace.

Admission is free, naturally - it's a mountain. Any season works, though winter gear is essential when it's wet. If you're camping locally at Porth Eryri Glamping, this makes an excellent morning mission before collapsing back at your glamping pod.
