Bryn Hafod-y-llan

The walk up Bryn Hafod-y-llan rewards you with proper views across the Conwy valley - the kind that make the leg-work worth it. It's not a massive peak by Welsh standards, but it punches above its weight for a half-day outing from Betws-y-Coed.

You get the full mountain experience without needing specialist kit or a dawn start. The ridge walk itself is straightforward enough, with decent paths most of the way, though it does get a bit boggy in places after rain. On a clear day you can see right across to Snowdonia's bigger hitters, which is rather lovely. The summit isn't particularly dramatic - no dramatic rocky outcrop or cairn - but the panorama makes up for it.

Give yourself three hours return trip if you're moving steadily. It's the sort of walk that works well for families with teenagers or anyone who wants genuine mountain air without the commitment of climbing Snowdon itself. History buffs won't find much here; this is pure landscape territory.

The nearest proper base is Betws-y-Coed, a short drive away, where you'll find cafes and decent facilities. Weather matters here - mist rolls in fast - so pick a day with decent forecasts. Free to access, no permits needed. Go early if you can; the car parks fill up by mid-morning during school holidays.
