Pen Ffridd-Sarn

The walk up Pen Ffridd-Sarn takes you through proper hill country just outside Betws-y-Coed, and the views back towards Snowdonia justify the effort. It's not a massive peak - you're looking at around 600 metres - but the ridge approach feels more substantial than the height suggests, with steep sections that'll get the blood pumping.

On a clear day, you get long sight lines across the Conwy Valley. Misty days are a different beast entirely, mind you. The surrounding moorland shifts from golden to grey depending on the light, and in autumn it's almost worth going just for the colour.

This is solid walker territory rather than a destination for casual strollers. You'll want proper boots and at least two hours to do it properly, longer if you're taking your time with photos. The scramble sections aren't technical, but they're not a gentle amble either. Families with older kids (10+) who've got some hill experience will manage fine. Younger children or anyone not confident on steep ground might find it frustrating.

Based near Betws-y-Coed, you're well-positioned for this as part of a wider Snowdonia trip. If you're staying at Porth Eryri Glamping or Snowdonia Glamping Holidays - both excellent spots, really - Pen Ffridd-Sarn slots in nicely as a half-day outing. Tyn Cornel Camping is also close enough to make it work as a morning mission before lunch.

There's no visitor centre or facilities on the peak itself. It's you, the hill, and whatever weather Snowdonia decides to throw at you. That's rather the point.
