Brunton Burn

Water this shallow and still doesn't sound like much until you're actually standing there, watching the light change across Brunton Burn. It's a proper little lake sitting inland from the Northumberland coast, near Chathill, and it's the sort of place that rewards a quiet morning visit more than a crowded afternoon.

The burn itself is manageable - not a vast reservoir that takes half a day to walk around, but rather an intimate body of water where you can see right across it. Birds use it, which means if you're into spotting, bring binoculars. The surrounding area is open enough that you get a real sense of the Northumberland landscape, that big sky feeling.

Walkers will find it worthwhile. It's a decent leg-stretch without requiring proper hiking boots, and there's something about the quietness that makes it feel like you've actually got away from things. Families with young children might manage fifteen minutes here before they get restless - it's not a playground, and there's no cafe on site that I'm aware of.

It slots nicely into a caravan holiday along this stretch of coast. Beadnell Bay is just three miles away, making Brunton Burn a morning diversion before heading to the beach. The area gets proper busy in summer, so this little lake offers a genuine escape. Go early, go quiet, and you'll understand why locals bother with it.
