Brunskill Pot

A vertical shaft drops into the hillside near Carnforth - that's Brunskill Pot, and it's one of those caves that rewards the slightly adventurous. You're looking at a proper sinkhole system, the sort of place where you need to know what you're doing before you venture in. It's not a walk-through show cave with handrails and gift shops; this is raw limestone country.

The pot itself is a dramatic natural feature, even if you're just peering down from the rim. If you're caving-capable, the drop descends into passages and chambers that appeal to experienced potholers rather than casual day-trippers. The surrounding area - moorland and limestone pavement - is worth a stomp around regardless of whether you go underground.

For families staying at nearby Primrose Glamping Pods, this works better as a walk destination than an activity in itself. The landscape is the real draw here: you get moorland views and that particular Yorkshire Dales geology. Kids will find the actual pot interesting for five minutes, then want to explore the surrounding hills.

Timing? An hour or so if you're just looking at it and walking the area. Bring proper footwear - limestone can be slick and the terrain is uneven. There's no visitor facility or charge that I'm aware of, but this is definitely one for people who know their way around the outdoors rather than those expecting easy access.
