Brough Park

Brough Park is a proper working nature reserve just outside Leek, and it's the sort of place that rewards a slow morning walk rather than a rushed afternoon visit. The site consists of wetland and grassland habitats where you'll spot lapwings, snipe, and if you're lucky, the odd kingfisher darting along the water. There are marked trails through the reserve, and the main paths are manageable underfoot even after rain, though it can get boggy in places.

Who gets the most from it? Bird watchers will have their binoculars trained the entire time. Kids under ten might find it a bit quiet unless they're already into spotting wildlife - there's no playground or visitor centre to break things up. Adults after a gentle two-hour walk through proper countryside will find it worth the trip, especially in spring when migrant species pass through.

Admission appears to be free, which is refreshing. There's limited parking near the entrance, so arrive early if you're visiting at weekends. The nearest town, Leek, is just a couple of miles away, making this ideal if you're based at one of the local caravan parks like Leek Camping and Caravanning Club Site or Rudyard Vale, both within easy driving distance.

It's not dramatic or showy. But if you want to escape the main tourist routes and actually see some wildlife without much fuss, Brough Park delivers. Allow two to three hours and bring decent shoes.
