Broken Buttress

The walk up to Broken Buttress rewards you with views that justify the effort, even if the name doesn't exactly inspire confidence. It's a limestone crag that's fractured in such a way it looks like something's given up on holding itself together - which is rather the point. You get proper, sweeping views across the Hope Valley from here, and on a clear day you can see why people bother making the trek.

The approach itself is straightforward enough, though it's not a casual stroll. Most people allow 45 minutes to an hour return trip from the nearest car parks around Hope Valley, and it's genuinely worth that time investment. The terrain is rocky underfoot in places, so decent boots help, especially if it's been wet. Families with teenagers will manage fine; younger kids might find it a slog.

What works best is combining this with a wider walk around the valley rather than treating it as a quick pop-in. If you're staying at Castleton Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite, just five miles away, you're in the heart of proper Peak District walking country. Broken Buttress fits naturally into a longer loop exploring the valley's other crags and footpaths.

Go early in the day, especially weekends, or you'll be sharing the viewpoint with half of Derbyshire. The light's generally better in the morning anyway. No facilities at the buttress itself - it's just rock and views - so bring water and a packed lunch if you're making a day of it.
