Broad Crag

The walk up Broad Crag from Ambleside is properly steep, especially the final push to the summit. You're looking at a fell, not a gentle ramble - 902 metres high and exposed enough that the wind can genuinely knock you sideways on a bad day. The payoff is a view across the central Lake District that spreads out like a map beneath your boots: Scafell Pike to the south, the Langdale Pikes sharp and close, and on clear days the coast beyond. It takes most people two to three hours up and down, depending on fitness. Bring weather-appropriate kit because conditions change fast up here.

Walkers with decent hill experience will get the most from this. It's not technical climbing, but it demands respect - the paths are rocky, the exposure is real, and you won't want to be caught out by afternoon mist. Families with young children might find the relentless gradient tiring rather than fun. If you're camping at Great Langdale Campsite or Fisherground, Broad Crag sits handily as a half-day objective after breakfast, though expect to be back by early evening.

There's no charge - it's open fell - but you'll need a car to reach the trailhead near Dunmail Raise. Pick a day when the forecast looks solid. Too many people head up in mist hoping it'll clear, and it rarely does. The rocks themselves are unremarkable grey slate, but when you're standing on top watching the light move across the fells, you'll understand why people keep coming back.
