Bridgwater Bay Nature Reserve

Miles of mudflats stretch towards the Bristol Channel, interrupted only by the odd wading bird picking its way through the shallows. Bridgwater Bay Nature Reserve protects this vast tidal landscape just beyond Burnham-on-Sea, where the River Parrett meets the sea in a sprawling expanse of saltmarsh and exposed sand.

Birdwatchers will find themselves properly spoilt here. The reserve attracts thousands of migrating wildfowl and waders throughout the year, with winter bringing huge flocks of dunlin, knot, and curlew. Spring and autumn migrations offer the best variety, though even summer visitors should spot plenty of activity among the pools and channels.

The walking here isn't for everyone - paths can be muddy and the terrain is flat as a pancake. But that's rather the point. This is wild, working landscape where the tide dictates the rhythm. Check tide times before you set off; high tide transforms the entire vista into a silver sheet of water.

Families staying at nearby parks like Haven Burnham-on-Sea or Sandy Glade should factor in at least half a day here, longer if the kids are keen on wildlife. The reserve works brilliantly as a contrast to beach days, offering a glimpse of Somerset's wilder coastline. Binoculars are essential - the birdlife is the main draw, and much of it keeps its distance from the footpaths.
