Brick Kiln Gorse

Dense woodland stretches across this corner of north Oxfordshire, just a short drive from Shipston-on-Stour. The forest takes its name from the old brick kilns that once operated here, though nature has long since reclaimed the industrial scars.

Walking is the main draw here - proper rambling country with well-worn paths threading between oak and beech trees. You'll spot the occasional clearing where sunlight breaks through, perfect for a breather or packed lunch. The going can be muddy after rain, so decent boots are essential.

Dog walkers love this place. Miles of trails mean even the most energetic spaniel will come home tired. Families with older children who enjoy a proper walk will get more from it than those with toddlers - the paths aren't buggy-friendly and there's no playground at the end.

Being ancient woodland, spring brings bluebells and wild garlic, while autumn offers proper leaf-kicking potential. Early morning or late afternoon visits tend to be quieter, though you're unlikely to encounter crowds any time of day.

If you're staying at one of the nearby sites like Kirby Farm Caravan Site or Twitey's Camping and Glamping Meadows, it makes for a decent morning's exercise before driving on to the Cotswolds proper. Just don't expect facilities - this is woodland in its natural state.
