You'll find yourself walking along the water's edge with mature trees overhead, spotting reed warblers if you're lucky and patient enough to keep still. The paths are straightforward enough for families, though they do get muddy after rain. Allow two hours if you're moving at a sensible pace and stopping to watch the water. Early morning or dusk is when the wildlife emerges - you're unlikely to see much if you rock up at midday with a picnic and expectations. This isn't a manicured garden experience. There's no cafe, no gift shop, no interpretation boards telling you what you're looking at. You come here to decompress, not to be entertained. That's its charm, frankly. The reserve works well as a half-day addition to a longer Kent break, especially if you're based at one of the nearby parks like Oak View or River View Camping - both within easy reach of Aylesford.
