Braveheart village

The film set from Mel Gibson's Braveheart still stands near Fort William, a working village that's part theme park, part functioning Highland settlement. You'll wander through recreated 13th-century buildings - a blacksmith's forge, a medieval market, a timber-framed hall - all built for the 1995 shoot and kept standing ever since. It's less "museum" and more "walk around where they filmed it", which sounds thin until you actually get there and realise how much atmosphere the place carries.

History buffs will find themselves disappointed if they're after genuine medieval architecture or deep context about the actual Braveheart legend. The buildings are film props, done well but not academic. Families with younger children might manage an hour, maybe ninety minutes if they're keen on film trivia or enjoy poking about old structures. Teenagers often find it underwhelming unless they've recently watched the film.

It's genuinely free to wander the grounds, though facilities and opening vary seasonally - best to check ahead before driving over from Fort William. The real value here is as a quick detour if you're already exploring the area around Glen Nevis. If you're staying at Glen Nevis Caravan & Camping Park or Ben Nevis Holiday Park, it's close enough for a morning visit without planning your day around it. Don't expect a day's worth of entertainment, but on a grey Highland afternoon it beats sitting in the caravan.
