Braunstone Park & Skatepark

The locals in Leicester call Braunstone Park their proper backyard escape, and once you've walked it, you'll understand why. It's a genuine nature reserve with actual wildlife - nothing manicured or theme-park-like about it. You're looking at woodlands, open grassland, and the kind of paths where you might actually spot something interesting rather than just lap a circuit.

The skatepark sits alongside, so there's a real split personality to the place. Families with younger kids get the open space and gentle walks. Teenagers and skaters get their own thing going. If you're here with a mix of ages, everyone genuinely finds something to do rather than suffering through what the other lot wanted.

Walkers should allow a good hour minimum to explore properly without rushing. The reserve isn't vast - you won't be out all day - but it's worth doing at your own pace. Spring and early summer are when the birds are active and the place feels proper alive.

Leicester's only four miles away, so this works perfectly as a morning slot if you're staying at Green Acres or The Paddocks - both excellent caravan parks nearby. Bradgate Park is close too if you want to stack a couple of reserves into a day. Free to visit, no entrance fees to worry about, and genuinely less crowded than you'd expect for somewhere this accessible to the city. The real strength here is it feels like a proper local spot, not a tourist tick-box.
