Box Berry Hill

A gentle 134-metre summit on the edge of the New Forest, Box Berry Hill won't leave you gasping for breath but delivers proper views across Hampshire's heath and woodland. The walk up from nearby Christchurch takes about 45 minutes through typical forest terrain - bracken, gorse, and scattered oak trees that turn lovely shades in autumn. Nothing too strenuous, making it well worth the effort for families with older children who fancy a proper countryside ramble.

From the top, you'll see across to the Solent on clear days, with the Isle of Wight sitting on the horizon. It's not the most dramatic panorama you'll ever encounter, but there's something satisfying about earning your view rather than driving to it. The hill sits within easy reach of several New Forest campsites, including Holmsley and Setthorns, making it a decent half-day excursion if you're staying in the area.

Bring a thermos and some sandwiches - there's plenty of space to spread out at the summit without feeling crowded. Dog walkers love this spot, and you'll likely encounter ponies grazing nearby. Allow two hours return from most forest car parks, though keen walkers could easily combine it with longer forest trails.
