Bowes Moor

The Roman fort at Bowes Moor sits on high ground above Barnard Castle, and honestly, it's more about the walk than the destination itself. There's not much left standing - mostly earthworks and foundations if you know what you're looking at. But that's precisely why it appeals: you get proper solitude and the chance to imagine what Coria looked like when legionaries were stationed here nearly two thousand years ago.

The site commands views across Teesdale that alone justify the trek. On a clear day you can see for miles, which explains why the Romans chose this spot. The moorland setting is bleak and windswept, especially in winter, so timing matters. Spring through early autumn is when you'll actually enjoy lingering here rather than just arriving, shivering, and leaving.

It's not a place for casual visitors expecting interpretation boards and visitor facilities - there aren't any. You'll need to do your homework beforehand or bring an archaeology guide. Walkers will get more from it than families with young children, though older kids interested in history will find scrambling about the earthworks entertaining enough.

If you're based at The Old Armoury Campsite nearby, this makes a decent afternoon ramble combined with exploring Barnard Castle itself. Allow two hours including the walk from the nearest road access. Free to visit, naturally. Go when the weather's decent and you've got energy for a proper hike - don't bother on a rainy Tuesday in February.
