Bottom Wood

Walk into Bottom Wood and you're immediately swallowed by proper woodland - the sort of place where the canopy closes over your head and the world outside feels a long way away. It's a working forest near Wallingford, managed for timber, which means the trees are substantial and the paths are well-trodden by locals who clearly know what they're doing.

The wood itself isn't vast, so you're looking at maybe an hour's ramble if you meander through without rushing. The paths are decent underfoot, though boggy patches appear after rain - nothing dramatic, but sturdy boots are sensible. It's the kind of woodland walk that appeals to families wanting something genuine rather than a manicured nature reserve, and to anyone keen on spotting deer or just breathing in the smell of damp earth and rotting leaves.

There's no visitor centre, no cafe, no signposting to speak of. That's rather the point. This is working woodland, not a theme park. You need to know roughly where you're going or accept you might take a wrong turn or two. Free to wander through, as far as I can tell from locals.

If you're staying at Rolling Fields Glamping or Ridgeway View Campsite - both five miles or so away - Bottom Wood is a solid half-morning activity. Pair it with a riverside walk around Wallingford itself or a visit to the town's castle ruins, and you've got a proper day sorted. It won't blow your mind, but it's real woodland walking without the crowds.
