Boscombe Down East

The chalk downland around Boscombe Down rises in proper earnest just a couple of miles east of Salisbury, and the summit itself makes for a bracing walk with genuine views across the Wiltshire plains. It's not mountainous - we're talking 240 metres or so - but the exposure feels real enough when you're up there, especially if the wind's got teeth.

What you're actually doing here is hiking to a viewpoint rather than visiting a specific attraction. The walk itself takes twenty minutes from the nearest road, and the reward is a panoramic sweep across the countryside that genuinely justifies the effort. On a clear day you can pick out the cathedral spire in Salisbury to the west, and the landscape rolls away green and rolling in every direction. Downland walkers will find this properly worthwhile, particularly if you're combining it with other walks across the chalk plateau.

There's nothing built up here - no visitor centre, no facilities. Bring water and a map, and pick your route carefully depending on where you park. The site has historical significance as a wartime RAF station, though there's precious little to see on the ground now besides archaeology.

If you're based at Salisbury Hillside Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite just down the road, this works as a half-day extension to your holiday. The walk alone won't occupy a whole day, but it pairs well with exploring Salisbury itself or tackling other sections of the downland path network. The Meadow Glamping, five miles away, also puts you within easy striking distance. Bring decent boots - it can be boggy after rain.
