Borrans Park

Walk past the car park at Waterhead and you'll stumble into Borrans Park without fanfare or entrance fee - just woodland, fell, and the kind of quietness that's increasingly rare around Windermere. It's a proper nature reserve rather than a manicured visitor attraction, which means overgrown paths, proper trees, and minimal signage telling you what you're looking at.

The main draw is the Roman fort remains dotted through the trees - foundations and low stone walls that genuinely reward a slow wander if you know what you're seeing. Walkers will appreciate the network of trails threading through mixed woodland and emerging onto open fell with decent views across the lake. It's not a destination in itself, more a worthwhile detour if you're already in the Waterhead area or staying at Lakeside Retreat Glamping just down the road.

Allow an hour to two hours depending on how much you poke about. Families with young kids might find the walking bit tedious and the Roman bits incomprehensible, though older children fascinated by archaeology will get something from it. The terrain's gentle enough - no scrambling - but paths can be muddy and overgrown in places.

Free access makes it an easy add-on to a Lake District holiday based at one of the nearby parks like Skelwith Fold or Low Wray. Best visited when it's dry; wet weather turns the paths into proper bogs. It's the kind of place that rewards you for bothering to look properly rather than expecting entertainment to come to you.
