Bolt Tail Promontory Fort

The walk down to Bolt Tail is steep, but you'll forget that the moment you see what's waiting at the bottom. This Iron Age fort sits right on the Devon coast near Kingsbridge, occupying a headland that juts into the sea with cliffs dropping away on three sides. What remains are earthwork ramparts and ditches - the kind of thing that looks modest from ground level until you realise you're standing inside concentric defensive walls built two thousand years ago.

It's a proper spot for history types and keen walkers. The fort itself takes maybe half an hour to explore properly if you're reading the landscape, but the real draw is the walk itself - South Devon's coastal path delivers views that make the legs worth it. The coastal cliffs here are dramatic without being showy, which somehow makes them better.

There's no visitor centre or signage to speak of, just the earthworks and the sea. Free to access, naturally. Time it for low sun and you'll get that raking light that shows the ramparts in their best form. From Karrageen Caravan & Camping Park it's barely over a mile away, so it pairs well with a weekend staying put. Families with older kids will manage it fine; very young ones might struggle with the descent and the uneven ground.
