Bolehill

Stone gritstone edges and heather-clad moorland stretch endlessly from this windswept summit in the Dark Peak. Bolehill offers one of those proper Derbyshire walks where you earn your views - it's a steady climb through bracken and bilberry bushes to reach the 1,325-foot trig point.

The panorama from the top takes in the Derwent Valley and across to Kinder Scout on clear days. Fell runners love this spot for the challenging terrain, while families with older children will find the scramble rewarding if they're up for a decent hike. Don't expect manicured paths - this is proper moorland walking.

Access is free and the hill is open year-round, though winter conditions can be brutal with driving rain and low cloud. Allow at least two hours for the round trip from the nearest parking spots near Matlock. Spring brings the best weather and fewer midges.

Staying at one of the caravan parks around Matlock puts you perfectly placed for exploring this corner of the Peak District.
