Bog Hill

The walk up Bog Hill from Moffat is straightforward enough, and on a clear day the views across Dumfries and Galloway are genuinely worth the effort. It's not a massive peak - you're looking at around two hours there and back depending on fitness - but it's the kind of hill that rewards you without demanding much in return.

The landscape here is proper Southern Uplands stuff: open moorland, a bit of bog underfoot (hence the name), and those long sight lines that make you feel like you've gone somewhere. On a grey day it can feel rather bleak, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. The walk suits anyone who wants fresh air without the scrambling nonsense you get on higher peaks.

Families with older kids will manage it without complaint, though younger children might find the moorland a bit samey. Walkers wanting a quick hill tick will love it. There's nothing touristy about Bog Hill - no visitor centre, no cafe, just you and the weather.

Moffat itself is a proper little town, good for a pint and some fish and chips after the walk. Both Howslack Farm and Riverside Holiday Park are within four miles, making it a natural addition to a Dumfries and Galloway park holiday. Hit it early in the day if you can - the light's better and you'll have the hill mostly to yourself.
