Bocking Windmill

That distinctive white tower visible across the Halstead countryside from miles around is Bocking Windmill, a proper working mill that's been grinding grain since 1787. The five-storey structure dominates the landscape with its sails intact - a rare thing for Essex mills, most of which have lost their mechanical guts to time and neglect. You can see it from the road easily enough, and if you're lucky enough to catch it when the sails are turning, it's genuinely impressive.

It's mainly an exterior visit unless you time things right - the mill does open occasionally for tours, but there's no regular schedule to speak of. Worth a stop if you're driving through Halstead, especially if you've got kids who like spotting old industrial structures. The real appeal is photographing it against the sky, or walking up close to appreciate the craftsmanship of the brickwork. Allow twenty minutes at most.
