Lower Wood

Walking through Lower Wood feels like stepping into proper Essex woodland - the kind of place where you actually see what the landscape looked like before developers got their hands on everything. It's a working forest near Halstead, with decent footpaths threading through mixed trees and the occasional clearing that catches decent light on a good day.

What you get here is straightforward: woodland walks, quiet enough to hear birdsong, the smell of damp earth after rain. There's no visitor centre, no café, no heritage story wrapped up in a gift shop. You come for the walk itself. Families with younger children will manage fine on the main paths - nothing technical - though it's not the sort of place that'll keep a bored ten-year-old entertained for hours. Walkers and anyone after a bit of peace will find it worthwhile.

Allow an hour or two depending on which route you take. It's free to access. Best visited outside peak holiday weekends when you might have it to yourself.

If you're staying at Gosfield Lake Resort just down the road - barely two miles away - this makes a solid morning outing before heading back for lunch. Same if you're based at any of the other caravan parks strung out towards Teybrook Orchard. It's the sort of walk that breaks up a week under canvas without requiring you to drive far. Nothing spectacular, but decent woodland on your doorstep beats fighting the crowds at somewhere more famous.
