Boar Knoll

The walk up Boar Knoll isn't long, but it's steep enough to catch you out if you're not paying attention. Once you've huffed your way to the top, you get proper views across Hampshire's chalkland - the sort of vista that makes you understand why people bother with walking in the first place.

It's a peak that rewards you without demanding hours of your time. The climb takes maybe 20 minutes from the road, making it ideal for families who want a proper walk without the commitment. Older kids will manage it fine; toddlers might need carrying for the steeper sections. History types will appreciate that you're walking across ancient downland, though there's nothing in the way of ruined castles or stone circles to photograph.

Timing-wise, go early morning or late afternoon to avoid the worst of any crowds - though Boar Knoll never gets rammed like some of the honey pot walks near Salisbury. The views are best in clear weather, obviously, so check the forecast before you trek out.

Pair it with a wander around Salisbury itself, or combine it with other chalk downland walks nearby.
