About Blyth Harbour Lighthouse

The red and white striped tower at Blyth Harbour has been guiding ships safely past the Northumberland coast since 1858, and it's still working today. You can't go inside - it's an active aid to navigation, not a visitor attraction - but that's rather the point. What makes it worth a visit is the walk along the harbour itself, where you get proper views of the lighthouse doing its job against the North Sea, fishing boats coming and going, and on a clear day, miles of coastline stretching north towards Tynemouth.

It's a straightforward spot to visit: grab an hour here, maybe grab fish and chips from one of the cafes near Whitley Bay, and keep moving. The appeal is the walk rather than the destination itself. History enthusiasts will appreciate the structure, but families with young kids might find it a bit underwhelming - there's nowhere to go up, nothing interactive, just a lighthouse standing in the harbour. Walkers, though, will enjoy the harbour path.

The real value is how it fits into a longer coastal route around the area. Both Parkdean Resorts Sandy Bay and Church Point are within easy striking distance, so you could make this a morning wander while based at either park, then push on to explore Whitley Bay proper or head north towards the Tyne. Free to look at, obviously. Best visited on a day with decent visibility - there's not much to see if the sea's throwing a fit.
