Bletchingley Castle

The motte-and-bailey earthworks at Bletchingley are what remain of a Norman castle that once commanded the Weald. You're looking at roughly 1000 years of settlement here - the raised mound and surrounding ditches are still visible enough to give you a proper sense of the medieval layout, even if the stones have long gone.

It's a straightforward visit. Walk round the earthworks, take a few photos, maybe sit on the bench and think about what life was like when this was actually a functioning stronghold. The village itself is pleasant enough - there's a decent high street in Bletchingley proper with some good pubs if you want to make an afternoon of it.

Walkers will appreciate this more than casual tourists. If you're rambling through Surrey, the castle's on a useful route through the Weald. Families with young kids will find it interesting for maybe thirty minutes before the lack of interactive features becomes obvious - it's genuinely just earthworks. History enthusiasts, though, will spend longer piecing together what the place meant strategically.

Access seems to be free and open whenever. The site sits right in the village, so there's no gate or visitor centre nonsense. Bletchingley's close enough to Redhill that you could easily combine it with other attractions if you're basing yourself at one of the caravan parks in the area - Alderstead Heath or Long Acres are within a short drive. Worth the detour if you're already walking in the region, but don't expect anything spectacular.
