Blea Hill Howe

There's a Bronze Age barrow sitting on Blea Hill, just outside Whitby, and it's the sort of place you'll walk straight past if you're not paying attention. But that's rather the point. This isn't some manicured heritage site with information boards and a gift shop - it's an actual archaeological feature from around 2000 years ago, left to sit quietly in the North Yorkshire landscape where someone once decided it was important enough to build.

You're essentially looking at a low mound, stubborn and weathered by centuries of wind and sheep. The walk up to it is proper rewarding though, offering decent views across moorland that feels genuinely remote despite being minutes from Whitby's tourist chaos. History types will spend time here thinking about Bronze Age communities and burial practices. Everyone else will spend five minutes, take a photo, and move on - which is fine. It's not a destination that demands hours.

Coming from Northcliffe or Broadings Farm holiday parks, this makes a decent side-trip during a wider walk rather than something you'd plan a day around. Go when the light's good, ideally late afternoon, and combine it with a proper hike across the moors. The site is free and accessible year-round, though winter can be boggy underfoot. Summer brings midges, so choose your season wisely. Real value lies in experiencing it as part of the broader archaeological and natural landscape of the area, not as a standalone attraction.
