Blary, dun site

The stone ramparts of Blary dun rise from the Argyll landscape like something forgotten, then remembered. This Iron Age fort sits near Tarbert, a proper bit of archaeology that rewards the short walk to reach it - you get the sense of standing where people actually lived, centuries back, rather than just reading about it in a museum.

What you're looking at is a dun: a small fortified settlement, the kind of stronghold that dotted the Scottish coast when the Romans were still making a nuisance of themselves down south. The stones are weathered now, grass-grown, but the defensive walls are clear enough if you know what you're looking at. The site commands views across the peninsula, which wasn't accidental - they could see trouble coming.

This is absolutely for history types and walkers. Casual tourists who need visitor centres and gift shops will find it a bit underwhelming, if I'm honest. Allow an hour or so to get there, have a poke about, and return. There's no admission fee because there's essentially no infrastructure, which is part of its charm and part of why you need to know it exists first.

Pair it with coastal walking or a visit to Tarbert itself, and you've got a proper exploration of Argyll's quieter corners. The effort to find it is minimal, the historical payoff genuine.
