Blagdon Lake

Five miles south of Wells, this substantial reservoir sits in a shallow valley beneath the Mendip Hills, created in the early 1900s to supply water to Bristol. The walking path around Blagdon Lake stretches for roughly four miles - a proper leg-stretcher that takes most people about two hours at a gentle pace.

Fishing dominates here. The lake has a reputation for quality trout, and you'll see anglers positioned along the banks from dawn onwards. Even if you're not wielding a rod, it's fascinating watching the techniques - some wade out in chest-high waders while others cast from the shoreline.

Birdlife is excellent year-round. Winter brings good numbers of wildfowl, while spring and summer see plenty of activity around the reed beds at the water's edges. The surrounding farmland adds skylarks and yellowhammers to the mix.

Walkers get the best deal - the perimeter path is largely flat with just a few gentle rises, making it suitable for most fitness levels. Families will find it manageable, though younger children might flag towards the end. The path can get muddy after rain, so proper footwear helps.
