Ubley Warren

The warren itself is unremarkable to look at - essentially a gentle hillside scattered with rabbit holes and scrubland near Wells - but walk it on a spring morning and you'll understand why locals bother. It's an old working landscape, the kind of place where you can actually see how people have shaped the Mendips over centuries. Rabbits (or what's left of them) still burrow here, though you're more likely to spot the birds and wildflowers than actual wildlife.

Walkers love this spot because it connects properly with the broader Mendip trails. The ground is surprisingly varied despite first appearances - dips and rises that keep your legs engaged, views across the levels toward Glastonbury when visibility's decent. It's not a destination in itself, more a punctuation mark on a longer ramble. Families with small children will find it dull; the terrain is manageable but there's nothing to hold their attention.

Historically it matters more than it looks. Warren management was serious business - these sites provided meat and fur for centuries. The landscape still bears those marks if you know what to look for.

If you're camping nearby at Cheddar Camping and Caravanning Club Site or staying at one of the glamping spots within a couple of miles, build this into a half-day walk rather than treating it as a standalone visit. Pair it with stronger attractions in the Cheddar Gorge area. Free, naturally, and accessible year-round, though autumn and spring are best when the ground's dry. Allow two hours including a slow circuit.
