Blaen Onneu

The walk up Blaen Onneu is properly steep, but the effort pays off once you're standing on the summit looking back towards Crickhowell. This isn't one of those gentle rambles - it's a proper fell walk that demands respect, especially after rain when the paths turn into streams. Allow three hours return if you're reasonably fit, longer if you stop to catch your breath and take photos.

What you're climbing is essentially a moorland ridge with open views across the Brecon Beacons landscape. On a clear day the horizon stretches for miles. The peak itself is a modest cairn - nothing dramatic - but the approach through gorse and grass keeps you entertained. Walkers will absolutely love this. Families with young children might find the steep sections tedious, but teenagers keen to build their hillwalking credentials will get something real from it.

The nearest town is Crickhowell, a charming spot for lunch before or after. If you're staying at Cwmdu Campsite just five miles away, this makes an excellent morning outing. It's free, obviously - just turn up. Go early if possible. The weather shifts fast up here, so check the forecast and pack a waterproof even if skies look promising. Don't expect crowds. That's the real appeal of Blaen Onneu - you'll have the ridge largely to yourself, which is increasingly rare in the Beacons these days.
