About Black Tor

The granite outcrop rears up suddenly from the moorland around Okehampton, proper dramatic when you crest the ridge and it's there. Black Tor isn't some polished tourist trap with a visitor centre and gift shop - it's a genuine, no-frills climb onto Dartmoor that rewards you with views that stretch for miles on a clear day.

The walk itself takes about ninety minutes from the nearest car park, depending on your route and fitness. The summit scramble is straightforward enough, nothing that needs ropes or climbing experience, though the rocks can be slippy when wet. Once you're up there, the 360-degree panorama across the moor is worth every step. You can pick out distant peaks and, on good weather days, see right across Devon.

This is squarely walkers' territory. Families with young kids might find the exposed moorland a bit bleak - there's no shelter, no café, no distractions once you're there. But if you've got teenagers who can manage uneven ground or you're after a proper moorland hike, Black Tor delivers without the crowds you'd get at more famous spots.

The nearest decent base is Okehampton itself, though Ashbourne Woods and Lydford Caravan & Camping Park, both highly rated, are within easy striking distance and make solid launching points for exploring this part of Dartmoor. Go in spring or early autumn for the best conditions - summer can be thick with visitors and midges, winter's moody but testing.

Free to visit, free to climb. Just respect the moor.
