Black Rock Nature Reserve

The Mendip Hills around Cheddar hide pockets of woodland that most visitors miss entirely. Black Rock Nature Reserve is one of them - a modest but proper little site that rewards a decent walk through limestone country. You're looking at ancient woodland with a good mix of tree species, the sort of place where you actually notice the difference between a beech and an oak because they're doing their thing in real geological context.

What you get here depends on how much effort you want to put in. It's not a formal visitor attraction with car parks and tea rooms - this is a genuine nature reserve where you come to walk, spot birds if you're into that, and breathe air that tastes like actual forest. Spring's the best time. Bluebells proper carpet the woodland floor, and the birdlife is genuinely interesting. Summer's fine too, though it gets warm in the canopy.

Historically types might find the limestone formations worth a look - the geology here tells the story of how the Mendips formed. Families with older children will get something from it; very young kids might find it a bit "just trees" after half an hour. Most people allow an hour to ninety minutes for a decent circuit.

It's free to access and works brilliantly as a half-day add-on if you're staying at one of the nearby glamping spots - Owley Woods is barely a mile away, Cheddar Bridge even closer. If you're doing the Cheddar Gorge tourist circuit, this offers a proper alternative: same landscape, fraction of the crowds, actual sense of being somewhere wild.
