Black Mixen

The walk up Black Mixen from Presteigne is straightforward enough - you're looking at a decent climb but nothing that'll have you gasping for air if you're reasonably fit. The peak itself sits at 1,515 feet, which sounds grander than it actually is until you're up there and realise just how far you can see across the Mid Wales moorland.

It's not a dramatic summit - no rocky outcrops or dramatic drop-offs. What you get instead is open, rolling countryside that stretches for miles. On a clear day the views are proper lovely, though the exposed nature of the walk means you'll be at the mercy of the weather. Wind and drizzle here feel more dramatic than they would elsewhere.

This is walker territory through and through. Families with young kids might find it a bit of a slog unless they're the hiking type, and there's precious little to hold your interest at the top beyond the views. Bring a decent map because the moorland paths can be confusing - it's easy to wander off course.

Allow a couple of hours for the round trip depending on your pace. The walk makes a natural half-day outing, and you're close enough to Presteigne to grab food afterwards. If you're staying at either Hush Hush Glamping or Presteigne Holiday Park, it's a solid day-walk option - neither is far away, and the moorland walking around here is genuinely good if you know where you're going.
