Bishop Middleham Quarry

An old quarry might not sound like a draw, but Bishop Middleham's is genuinely worth a detour if you're exploring County Durham. What you've got here is a dramatic working landscape - vast stone faces carved into the hillside, with that distinctive pale sandstone that built much of northern England. It's the sort of place that stops you mid-walk and makes you think about the sheer effort that went into shaping the land.

The quarry itself is impressive from a distance, particularly if you catch it from the right angle on the footpaths that run past it. You're not walking around inside - it's still active, so access is limited - but the scale is genuinely striking. Families with older kids will find it interesting for twenty minutes or so, though younger ones might lose interest quickly. It's really the walkers and industrial heritage types who'll get the most from it.

Durham's just a few miles south, so this works well as a waypoint on a longer ramble rather than a destination in itself. If you're staying at one of the caravan parks nearby - Donnewell Farm or Woodside Ridge are closest at around three miles - it's worth incorporating into a morning walk. Free to view from public footpaths, takes perhaps an hour including a decent look around.
