Birk Knott

There's a proper scramble waiting at Birk Knott, a craggy little peak just outside Kendal that doesn't pretend to be anything grander than it is. The walk itself is short and sharp, taking most people under an hour to reach the summit, and the views across the surrounding fells are genuinely worth the effort. On a clear day you can pick out the bigger peaks beyond, though the real reward is the sense of accomplishment for minimal legwork.

It's the sort of place that works brilliantly for families who fancy something with teeth but don't want a full day expedition. Kids with decent legs will find the scrambling bits engaging rather than exhausting, though you'll need sure footing and a head for heights in places.
