Birchanger Dog Field

A sprawling off-lead space near Dunmow where dogs get to do what they do best - run themselves ragged without a lead in sight. The field itself is fairly open grassland, the kind of place that's brilliant for Border Collies and spaniels but less thrilling for humans unless you're genuinely into watching your dog sprint in circles for two hours.

If you're staying at Dairymeade Farm Glamping nearby, it's a handy spot to burn off dog energy before settling in for the evening. The walk over takes barely five minutes from the park. Fair warning though: it can get muddy, and there's no guarantee you'll get peace and quiet - depends entirely on what other dogs show up that day. Some afternoons it's packed with absolute chaos; other times you might have the run of the place.

Regular dog owners will find it useful enough. It's free, which is the only thing keeping it from feeling like a wasted trip on a quiet day. There are no facilities, no water bowls, no shelter - bring a poop bag and realistic expectations. The field is what it is: decent-sized, properly secure, and about as thrilling as dog spaces get. Worth a morning visit if you're passing through Essex with a four-legged friend, but don't make a special journey for it. Twenty minutes to half an hour usually covers it.
