Binscombe Church

The church sits quietly on the edge of Binscombe, just a few miles south of Guildford, and it's the sort of place you'd stumble upon rather than deliberately hunt down. It's a proper little Saxon church, largely unchanged for centuries, with that particular air of rural English devotion that makes you go a bit soft. Inside there's genuine medieval work - the sort of thing that actually stops you mid-stride when you realise how long it's been standing here.

This is genuinely for people who love old churches. Historians will spend time poking about the details; casual visitors might spend twenty minutes looking round and that's fine too. There's no faffing about with entrance fees or opening hours restrictions that I could pin down, so you can usually have a nose about whenever. If you're camped at Firesyde or Chantry Wood - both within a few miles - it's the kind of walk that breaks up the day without demanding half your morning.

The surrounding area is proper Surrey countryside, all rolling hills and sensible villages. It works best as part of a wider wander rather than a destination in itself. Combine it with a walk through the wider parish and you'll get a real sense of how these communities have threaded themselves into the landscape. Kids won't find much to do here, to be honest, but if you've got history-minded adults in the group it's absolutely worth the short drive from wherever you're staying locally.
