Godalming Museum

Godalming's local museum sits right in the heart of this Surrey market town, just a short hop from Guildford. It's the sort of place that tells you what a town actually cares about - and Godalming cares quite a lot about its industrial past and the people who built it.

Inside you'll find the usual suspects: old photographs, bits of textile machinery (Godalming was proper textile country), local artefacts, and displays on the town's development from medieval times onwards. Nothing flashy, but genuinely interesting if you've got even a passing interest in how ordinary English towns worked. The museum does a decent job of explaining why Godalming mattered - it wasn't just sleepy countryside.

It's worth an hour or so, maybe 90 minutes if you read everything. Kids under ten might find it a bit dry unless they're already into local history; teenagers who actually engage with museums will get more from it. Adults doing a proper tour of the area will find it slots in nicely with a walk around the town centre.

If you're staying at one of the nearby parks - Chantry Wood Campsite or Tilford Woods Lodge Retreat are the closest - this works as a rainy-day plan or a morning activity before heading out to walk the Wey Valley. On a decent day you might skip it and head straight for the riverside instead, but if the weather's iffy it beats sitting in a field.
