Big Pool

Water that stretches far enough to make you forget you're in Shropshire - that's Big Pool for you. It's a proper lake, the kind where you can actually lose the afternoon without feeling like you're missing out on something better elsewhere. The walk around it takes a solid hour or more depending on your pace, and the path varies between decent stretching and a bit boggy in places, so wear something with grip.

This is walker territory, full stop. Bring binoculars if you're into birds - the place attracts waterfowl year-round. Families with young kids might find it a bit of a slog round the whole perimeter, though there are spots to chuck a stone in the water and call it entertainment. The views aren't dramatic, but they're genuinely calm. Come on a weekday morning and you'll barely see another soul.

It's free and always accessible - no gates or fees nonsense. The nearest proper town is Bridgnorth, a proper old market place with actual character, about twenty minutes away. If you're basing yourself at Wheathill Touring Park, Big Pool makes an easy morning or afternoon mission that doesn't require any planning beyond a decent pair of trainers. Winter's actually lovely here when the light's sharp and everything's quieter than usual. Summer gets busier but still manageable if you go early. Don't expect cafes or facilities - bring a flask and settle in.
