Big Earth

Ancient woodlands don't come much more atmospheric than this sprawling forest just outside Dawlish. Big Earth stretches across rolling Devon countryside, with well-marked paths threading through dense stands of oak, beech and birch that feel properly wild despite being so accessible. The name suggests something grand, and it delivers - this is serious woodland walking territory where you can easily lose yourself for half a day.

Families will find the going manageable on the main trails, though pushchairs might struggle on some of the muddier sections after rain. Dog walkers absolutely love it here, and you'll spot plenty of four-legged locals getting their daily exercise. The forest canopy creates a lovely cathedral-like atmosphere, particularly striking in autumn when the leaves turn spectacular shades of copper and gold.

Expect to spend two to three hours if you're doing a proper circuit, though you could easily make it a longer expedition with a picnic. The paths can get boggy in winter, so decent walking boots are wise. No facilities to speak of, so come prepared.

Staying at one of the holiday parks along the nearby coast - Haven Devon Cliffs or Dawlish Sands are both within easy reach - makes this a cracking inland alternative when you fancy a break from the seaside crowds. It's the sort of place that reminds you why Devon's countryside is just as compelling as its famous coastline.
