Bidein Bad na h-Iolaire

The walk up Bidein Bad na h-Iolaire doesn't grab headlines like Ben Nevis does, but that's precisely why it's worth the effort. This peak sits in the shadow of its more famous neighbour, which means you'll have the ridge to yourself on most days - a proper luxury in the Highlands. The name translates to 'peak of the eagle's nest', and once you're up there, you understand why.

It's a technical climb rather than a slog. The approach kicks off near Fort William, and you're looking at a half-day commitment if you're reasonably fit. The scramble itself is engaging enough to hold your attention - no endless bog, just solid rock and views that open up across Loch Linnhe and towards the spine of the Grey Corries. On a clear day, you can pick out Ben Nevis proper from up here, which is rather satisfying.

Historically, these peaks meant something to the Jacobites and the old Highland clans, though Bidein Bad na h-Iolaire tends to keep that story quieter than some. What matters now is the walking. Serious hillwalkers will find it rewarding; families with young kids might struggle with the technical sections, but teenagers who've done a few peaks will manage fine.

If you're camping at Glen Nevis Caravan & Camping Park or Ben Nevis Holiday Park - both within a couple of miles - this makes an excellent complement to the more crowded Ben Nevis path. Worth the detour, especially if you want the mountains without the queues.
