Benny Beg sport climbing, 3 to 6a

The crag at Benny Beg, just outside Crieff, is a proper little climber's playground that punches well above its weight. You're looking at routes graded 3 to 6a - so solid beginner to intermediate terrain with enough variety to keep you occupied for a morning or a full day if you're keen. The sandstone here is grippy and forgiving, which matters when you're still learning to trust your feet on real rock.

What makes it worthwhile is the location. The crag sits high enough to offer decent views across Perthshire, and the approach walk from Crieff takes you through countryside that feels properly removed from the tourist trail. Walkers who aren't climbers can make an afternoon of the footpaths alone. Families with older kids - say, teenagers wanting to try sport climbing for the first time - will find this far less intimidating than bigger crags. You need proper climbing gear and ideally some experience or a qualified instructor, though the grades are forgiving enough for supervised beginners.

The season runs best spring through autumn, though it can be wet. Allow three to four hours if you're climbing; half that if you're just walking up for the view. Crieff itself is twenty minutes away with shops and cafes. If you're staying at Braidhaugh Holiday Lodge nearby - barely 1.3 miles off - you could easily combine this with a few days in the area. The Highland Main Line walks and Ochil Forest aren't far either. It's not a destination crag, but as part of a wider Perthshire trip, it's genuinely worth the detour.
