Bellaport Wood

The woodland floor is thick with moss and leaf litter, the sort of place where you half expect to stumble across a family of badgers mid-afternoon. Bellaport Wood sits just outside Market Drayton in Cheshire, a proper working forest rather than some manicured country estate walk. The trees are dense enough that even on bright days you're walking in dappled shadow, and there's a genuine sense of being away from things despite being minutes from town.

What you get is straightforward: woodland paths, the sound of birds, occasional clearings where light floods through. It's the kind of place walkers actually enjoy rather than tick off a list. Dogs come alive here. Kids will either love the freedom and fallen logs to clamber over, or get bored within forty minutes depending on their age and energy levels. Honestly, it's not a destination in itself, but if you're staying nearby at Sunny Side Touring Park, it's a cracking spot for a couple of hours when you want to stretch legs without the crowds.

Timing-wise, autumn and winter are when the forest looks best - proper atmospheric, less sticky underfoot. Spring's decent too. Summer can get a bit oppressive with the density of growth. There's no visitor centre, no facilities that I could find, so come prepared. Allow an hour minimum if you're actually walking it, longer if you're the type to stop and listen to things.
